(This session is for students entering 4th-6th) The Spoon River College Office of Community Outreach will once again be offering a youth program this summer. The program is being held July 13-16 from 9am-Noon each day. The program will be held at the Spoon River College Macomb Outreach Center located at 2500 East Jackson Street.  

CHOOSE ONE TOPIC FROM EACH SESSION FOR EACH DAY

July 13

Session 1
Topic 1: Cricket Keepers
Instructor: Lily Moser, SRC
Pick your cricket and personalize its new habitat! Learn about the small creature known as the cricket, how it lives, what it eats, and how you can make the perfect cricket home!

Topic 2: Solar Powered Jitter Bugs
Instructor: Allysia Adams, SRC
Get ready to design and assemble your very own solar powered jitter bug! build a simple vibrating robot using a solar panel and motor! Test your problem solving, design and engineering skills!

Session 2
Topic 1: Terrarium & Fairy Garden Building
Instructor: Bloom Macomb Staff
Do you enjoy working with your hands, creating something unique that you can add to over time? Prepare yourself to build an ecosystem that you can customize! and make all your own!

Topic 2: All About Bees!
Instructor: Holly Norton, Thomas Vogel, SRC
Get ready for a buzzing adventure! Learn about bees - how they live, work, and help the world around us! Get a kid - friendly peek into bee keeping and the products that can be made from what bees produce!


July 14

Session 1
Topic 1: Jewelry Making
Instructor: Lily Moser, SRC
Do you have an interest in making jewelry? Learn different jewelry making techniques while using a variety of fun beads and clasps!

Topic 2: Aquatic Animals
Instructor: Kayleigh Smith, IDNR
Learn about the different Illinois animals that live in or around ponds, rivers, and lakes, and how to safely interact with them! Interact with live animals and test your identification skills with the real deal!

Session 2:
Topic 1: Buzzing Creativity!
Instructor: Kim Dunngan
Bees play an important role in our lives. During this fun and artsy session, learn how create a simple painted background, then tear and glue colored paper to create the image of a bee.

Topic 2: First Aid & CPR
Instructor: Jason Arthur, MDH
This youth focused CPR and first aid session will cover recognizing different emergencies, calling 911, chest compressions, using an AED, basic first aid procedures!


July 15

Session 1:
Topic 1: Print Making
Instructor: Lydia Perrilles , SRC
Get ready to roll, stamp, and create! Students will learn about the craft of printmaking, dabble in its history, and create their own block print masterpieces. We will explore techniques using color, pattern and texture to make one of a kind designs!

Topic 2: Gardening Fun!
Instructor: Thomas Vogel, SRC
Get ready for a really dirty adventure! Learn all about gardening-from seed to flower. The life cycle of plants and how they maintain the world around us. Get a sneak peek into horticulture and discover what plants need to thrive!

Session 2:
Topic 1: Intro to All Things Geology & Fossils
Instructor: Teagan Markham, SRC
Explore the exciting world beneath your feet! Become a young geologist and learn about rocks, minerals, and how the Earth changes over time. Dig into the past by discovering fossils and what they have to tell us about dinosaurs, plants, and ancient life!

Topic 2: Sun Catchers
Instructor: Lily Moser, SRC
Harness the beauty of the sun by creating a beautiful sun catcher that can be displayed in your window with pride! Learn how the sun reflects light and how this can affect the world around us.


July 16

Session 1:
Topic 1: Lego Builders
Instructor: Beth Chatterton, McDonough Co. 4H
Calling all youth who love to explore, imagine, and engineer. Design and build a bridge to see whose creation can support the most weight. Will yours be the strongest? Dive into creativity and motion by constructing LEGO marble runs, experimenting with design, speed, and problem-solving along the way.

Topic 2: The Colors of the Prairie
Instructor: Natalie Shelly, Macomb Park District
Explore and identify some of the key grasses and flowers that can be found in an Illinois tallgrass prairie. We’ll then take inspiration from the colors found in the prairie to create a simplified mixed media artwork that combines watercolor, oil pastel, and colored pencils that will be a lovely tribute to this native landscape!

Session 2:
Topic 1: Music Essentials
Instructor: Josiah Daneels, Community Music School 
Prepare to learn about music and participate in various activities as you become more familiar with the essential elements of music! Explore these elements including beat, meter, rhythm, tonality, and more!

Topic 2: Slime & More
Instructor: Lily Moser, SRC
Get your hands dirty and prepare to experiment with making slime, cloud dough, soap foam, and even painting through straws! The possibilities are endless!
