A Woman Ahead of Her Time: Josie Westfall's Bold Campaign-Macomb
In 1914, before women even had the right to vote, a Macomb woman with no formal legal education made the bold decision to run for City Judge. What might seem ordinary today was, at the time, a striking act of courage and conviction. This workshop delves into the story of Josie Westfall, a socially conscious community member whose determination reflected both local needs and the broader national struggle for women’s suffrage. Participants will use local historical sources and suffrage-era materials to investigate Westfall’s motivations, the challenges she faced, and the impact of her campaign on her community and beyond. This hands-on exploration invites learners to piece together her story, recognizing that historical evidence does not always provide a definitive answer, but often leaves us to interpret and imagine the possibilities.
