ClassGraphic This course is for those currently working in healthcare as Medical Assistants, but they are un-certified. The purpose of this course is to enhance and strengthen the person’s medical knowledge and clinical skills, in order for the person to become certified. This 8-week course will prepare him/her for the National Healthcareer Association’s Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) Certification Exam. Upon completion of this course, all participants will sit for the national CCMA Exam on the SRC Canton Campus during the last week of May.


Description: This course will provide the student with the essential knowledge and skills to perform as a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant in a medical office setting. The student will learn how to provide basic patient care in an outpatient clinic setting. The student will be trained in ethical and legally safe healthcare practices and adhere to regulations and guidelines related to infection control. The student will gain knowledge in medical terminology, basic pharmacology, basic anatomy and physiology, and patient care coordination. The student will learn clinical tasks such as measuring and obtaining vital signs and anthropometric measurements, basic CLIA-waived laboratory testing and procedures, along with basic phlebotomy and medication administration skills. The administrative tasks that will be covered in this course are learning important medical documentation processes and guidelines, entering patient information into the office software system, communicating and providing customer service to patients and caregivers, and an introduction to the medical insurance and billing process. Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to confidently and safely provide basic patient care. Students will be able to properly prepare a patient for an office visit, exam or procedure, measure vital signs, obtain a comprehensive medical history and use therapeutic communication techniques to provide excellent customer service.

This course will meet for 2 hours, once a week for 8 consecutive weeks. All students participating in this course will receive a CCMA Study Guide textbook, access to online practice exams, and one attempt at the CCMA Certification Exam. All students will be scheduled to take the CCMA Exam at the Spoon River College Canton Campus, upon completion of the course.

Fee: The cost of this program would typically be $350. Thanks to funding from the “Illinois Pipeline for the Advancement of the Healthcare (PATH) Workforce Program” SRC is able to cover $325 of this fee. That means YOU pay only $25!
